British tennis player Marcus Willis admitted that he absolutely enjoyed his 2016 Wimbledon fairytale run.
Willis, 32, made his Wimbledon main draw debut in 2016 after winning three qualifying matches to secure a main draw place.
In the summer of 2016, Willis was handed a wildcard for the qualifying event - he then famously defeated Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Yuichi Sugita to reach the main draw.
After winning three qualifying matches, Willis then earned his first Grand Slam victory after upsetting Ricardas Berankis in the Wimbledon first round.
Willis, who required a wildcard to just get into the qualifying event, then got a chance to play against Wimbledon icon Roger Federer.
Even though Willis suffered a 6-0 6-3 6-4 loss to Federer, his Wimbledon story made the headlines nationwide.
Willis on playing Federer, his 2016 Wimbledon run“It was quite a big story, something quite rare and it was great to be a part of it. I got a wild card into qualifying and then got to play Federer in the second round, so there was some luck attached to story, but deep down I always knew I could do it. It all happened so quickly. I don’t remember the coin toss or the first point. I remember being 6-0 down very quickly. Then I was in a dogfight in the second set and I just went with it. It was tough, it was physical and even now, people talk to me about the lob I got on him. The media was a bit of a frenzy. That’s what the media is like. It was a great story. I was absolutely loving it. My life changed the next day. I was on morning TV, Hello magazine followed me around for a bit and it was awesome, a new experience," Willis told Tennis365.
In 2017, Willis made the Wimbledon qualifying final round before losing to Ilya Marchenko.
Since then, Willis hasn't had any singles appearances at Wimbledon.
Now, Willis is focused on doubles and he is aiming to return to 2023 Wimbledon as a doubles participant.
