World No 1 Iga Swiatek suggests the WTA could learn some lessons from the ATP as she admits she would like to see more stability regarding the WTA Finals.
Swiatek, 21, made back-to-back WTA Finals appearances in the last two years, competing in Guadalajara last year and Fort Worth this year, respectively.
Three years ago, there was a $14 million prize money at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen.
The WTA signed a 10-year deal with Shenzhen but last year the whole Asian swing was canceled, while for this year the WTA suspended all China tournaments following the Peng Shuai controversy.
For this year's WTA Finals edition, the prize money was $5 million.
However, it should be noted that this year the WTA themselves had to put up the prize money for the WTA Finals.
On the ATP Tour, there is a far bigger stability as they have a regular location for the ATP Finals.
During this year's WTA Finals, WTA CEO Steve Simon suggested the WTA will try to avoid one-year WTA Finals deals going forward.
Swiatek calls for more stability regarding the WTA Finals“I've never experienced WTA Finals, like in its prime, you know, in terms of the organisation and WTA, like not hurrying with everything, if you know what I mean. So I would love for WTA to kind of settle for next year's on one place and actually make it so big as it was or maybe as ATP has. But on the other hand, I'm kind of understanding why it happened and from business side is probably hard to make this kind of event. But I just think if ATP can do it, we can do it. There's always talk about prize money during ATP and WTA Finals. And it's just pretty sad that WTA kind of got hit by Covid and by not having the place to play before and organise everything properly. But on the other hand, you have an example in ATP, that they were able to do everything and even increase the prize money. So, hopefully, for next time, we're going to be more prepared. I know Covid happened. But on the other hand, most of the tournaments were able to provide even more or the same. So hopefully next year this is going to change," Swiatek explained, per Eurosport.
After going unbeaten in the group stage, Swiatek suffered a surprise defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA Finals semifinal stage.
