Former Masters winner Angel Cabrera was convicted of assaulting his former girlfriend and sentenced to more than two years in prison.
Cabrera, now 53, will have to stay behind bars for two years and four months.
Angel Cabrera, storyThe Argentinian who won the Augusta Masters in 2009, two years after his success in the US Open, is accused of having repeatedly violated Cecilia Torres Mana. She had declared minor injuries and indicated that she was being coerced and threatened with coercion.
Many say prison is bad, but it's not, prison has done me good. After fleeing justice in his country, Cabrera was placed on Interpol's "code red" list and then arrested in Brazil. At trial, Torres Mana's case was joined by a complaint from Cabrera's ex-wife, Silva Rviadero, and another ex, Michaela Escudero.
According to various reports in Argentina, “El Pato” said in court during his trial: “Many say that prison is bad, but it is not, prison made me feel good.”
Cabrera is being held in a prison called Carcel de Bouwer, near Cordoba. This establishment, which is said to house some of the most dangerous criminals in Argentina, is nicknamed “El Penal del Infierno”, or the “Prison of Hell”.
His return to the Masters, as a former winner, will therefore certainly not take place before 2025.
Cabrera first worked as a caddy in the golf club of his famous compatriot Eduardo Romero, who later became his mentor. At the age of 20 he became a professional golfer and failed to qualify for the European Tour three times. With the financial support of Eduardo Romero, Cabrera tried a fourth time in 1995 and succeeded. He then established himself on the Tour with three wins and steadily improved his rankings until 2005, when he finished fifth on the money list.
In 2006, Cabrera was able to achieve a respectable 8th place at The Masters in Augusta, Georgia. Since the 2007 season he has mainly played on the North American PGA Tour. In June 2007, Cabrera won his first major, the US Open, becoming the first Argentine to win this important tournament.
In October 2007 he was awarded Honorary Life Membership of The European Tour and at the end of that year he was named Sportsman of the Year in his home country.
In April 2009 he secured his second major title in the playoffs by winning The Masters. This tournament has also not been won by an Argentine before.
In 2013, Cabrera almost managed to win the Masters again. Only at the second extra hole did he lose to the Australian Adam Scott in the jump-off.
Angel Cabrera represented his country, together with Eduardo Romero, at the World Cup continuously from 1998 to 2005 and was called up to the International Team at the Presidents Cup in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2013.
