Lynette Federer suggested she and Robert Federer were prepared for Roger's retirement as they sensed that retirement was nearing after the Swiss great started experiencing major knee problems.
On Friday, Federer's career came to an end at the Laver Cup.
Federer, 41, has had three knee surgeries over the last two and a half years.
"Robbie and I had long grappled with the idea that it was going to end. Due to age, but also because of his various injuries. In between there was always hope, but then we realized: It (the right knee) is no longer good enough," Lynette Federer told Tages Anzeiger.

Federer finished his career with 20 Grand Slams - two less than Rafael Nadal and one less than Novak Djokovic.
Still, there are some who think Federer deserves to be considered as the GOAT.
When asked about the GOAT debate, mom Federer left to tennis fans to decide for themselves who's the real GOAT.
“I think everyone should decide for themselves who is their greatest tennis player," Linette Federer explained.

After teaming up with Rafael Nadal in his final match, Federer gave a very emotional speech as he broke down in tears several times.
Most importantly, Federer had a memorable sendoff.
“The match, yes, in itself, sure, is special, but it's really everything that happened after because I wasn't aware who was going to come to sing, what was going to happen, where I should go, what was expected of me, or how long it was going to go,” Federer said after his final match. "Then I guess looking around and seeing how everybody got emotional, obviously it's even better, or even worse, I'm not sure what to say."
