Roger Federer was grateful to Carlos Alcaraz for his nice retirement message and revealed that he is enjoying following the 19-year-old's impressive rise.

After Federer revealed his plans to retire after the Laver Cup, Alcaraz praised Federer for being "an inspiration" and thanked him for everything that he has done for the game of tennis.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, responded to Alcaraz, who clinched his first Grand Slam title at this past US Open.

"Thanks for your kind words. Enjoying watching your rise. Congrats on the Open Carlitos," Federer wrote in the comment section of Alcaraz's Instagram post.

Alcaraz's tribute to Federer

"Roger has been one of my idols and a source of inspiration! Thank you for everything you have done for our sport! I still want to play with you! Wish you all the luck in the world for what comes next! @rogerfederer," Alcaraz wrote on Instagram.

Just a few days before Federer announced his retirement, Alcaraz expressed a desire to play Federer.

This season, Alcaraz has played against and beaten Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

After playing Nadal and Djokovic, Alcaraz also wanted to clash Federer.

"Playing against Federer would excite me and beating a 'Big Three' player in a Grand Slam. I’ve always said that in order to be the best, you have to beat the best," Alcaraz told the ATP Tour website.

Unfortunately, Alcaraz won't get a chance to compete against Federer.

Initially, Federer was also aiming to play at the Swiss Indoors Basel in October.

Alcaraz, 19, is also signed up for Basel and theoretically there was a chance he would play Federer at the Swiss Indoors Basel.

Unfortunately for the Basel organizers and Alcaraz, there won't be Federer at this year's tournament edition.

The game is set to lose Federer, but likely has another all-time great in the name of Alcaraz.
