Daniil Medvedev speaks on facing Nick Kyrgios at US Open

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev expects "a great match" when he meets Nick Kyrgios in the US Open round-of-16.

On Friday, Medvedev ousted Yibing Wu 6-4 6-2 6-2 to safely progress into the last-16 at Flushing Meadows.

Next up for Medvedev will be a fourth career meeting versus Kyrgios.

Going into the match, Kyrgios leads their head-to-head 3-1. 

“We’ve played great matches. I think all have been quite tight on the scoreboard,” Medvedev said. “It’s 3-1 to him but I will try to do better this time and it will be a great match for people to watch. It is shaping up to be a great match with Medvedev reaching the fourth round without dropping a set while Kyrgios dropped only one set – against Benjamin Bonzi in the third round."

Medvedev on Kyrgios: We are not friends, but we respect each other

When asked about his relationship with Kyrgios, Medvedev admitted they are not really friends, but added they definitely respect each other.

“I don’t think we are friends. When I say ‘friends’, we haven’t been to the bar together. I feel like we respect each other a lot. On the court also we never really had any fight or anything, which can change any moment. We are both quite electric. You never know what’s going to happen in the future. Nick is a little bit different from other tennis players sometimes on the court. That’s his choice. That’s his life. I’m not the one to judge.”

Earlier this year at the Australian Open, Medvedev defeated Kyrgios.

Four weeks ago at the Montreal Masters, Kyrgios got his revenge as he defeated Medvedev in the second round.

Medvedev was up by a set in Montreal, before Kyrgios stormed back to win 6-7 (2) 6-4 6-2. 

Going into their US Open match, Medvedev will certainly be looking to get a revenge and beat Kyrgios for the second time in his career.
