Now it's official: Cameron Smith leaves the PGA Tour and moves to LIV Golf. The Australian, world number 2 (winner this year of the 150th edition of The Open), has therefore chosen the Arab Super League, the new economic power of the green, and will be among the protagonists of "The International", an event scheduled in Boston from 2 to 4 September.

Same choice also for the Chilean Joaquin Niemann, currently 19 / o in the world ranking. Harold Varner III, Cameron Tringale, Marc Leishman and Anirban Lahiri also move to LIV Golf.

LIV Golf, also known as Super Golf League, is a professional golf tour. It was established in 2022 with the support of the Public Investment Fund (the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia). The Golf Tour competes with the PGA Tour (USA) and the DP World Tour (Europe) and offers significantly higher prize money.

The name LIV refers to the total number of holes to be played on each tournament (54 in Roman numerals, representing 3 rounds of 18 holes), as opposed to the usual 72 holes (4 rounds of 18 holes) on other tours . Alternatively, 54 is the score obtained for scoring a birdie on every hole on a par 72 hole.

In March 2022, LIV Golf CEO, former professional golfer and former world number one Greg Norman, announced the schedule for the first season of the LIV Golf Invitational Series. This consists of eight tournaments played over 54 golf courses without a cut. Each tournament consists of a field of 48 players, who are sorted into 12 teams of four players each. The total prize money amounts to 255 million dollars.

Although Greg Norman won the Open Championship twice, in 1986 and 1993, he failed at the other majors. Often very close and sometimes unlucky, such as at the PGA Championship in 1986, when his opponent Bob Tway snatched victory from him with a bunker shot, or the following year at the Masters, when Larry Mize chipped in with a miracle shot from 40 meters in the jump-off. On the other hand, Norman has lost some chances of winning majors due to bad final rounds, such as a 78 at the Masters in 1996 or a 75 at the US Open in 1995. The year 1986 was significant - he led all four majors before the final round and "only" won those Open Championship. Despite all these setbacks, one shouldn't overlook the fact that Norman has a total of 30 top ten finishes in the majors. The list of his numerous worldwide tournament victories can be found below (see also points 5 to 8 of the table of contents).
