The 2017 Citi Open in Washington brought the quarter-final clash of two young guns who had already made their mark on the ATP Tour. The more experienced of them, Alexander Zverev, took down Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 6-4 in 58 minutes to reach the semis and remain on the title course. The German dropped ten points in nine service games and saved two break chances in the opening set's final game when he was already miles in front. Medvedev won only 37% of the points behind the second serve and lost serve three times from five opportunities offered to Zverev. The Russian started to play better in the second set, staying in touch with the German in the opening eight games before Alexander shifted into a higher gear to seal the deal with a break at 4-4. Zverev was 20-14 in front in service winners and fired 14 direct points in comparison to Medvedev's five, none from a backhand wing.

Alexander Zverev lost only six games against Daniil Medvedev in Washington 2017.

They had the same number of unforced and forced errors. Alexander built the advantage after hitting 15 winners more, 34 to 19. 70% of the points ended in the shortest rallies up to four strokes. Zverev had a clear upper hand in them, winning 42 and losing 27. Daniil fought well in the extended exchanges, where Alexander created a slim 16-13 lead. Zverev broke Medvedev at 15 in the encounter's opening game and cemented the lead with three service winners in the next one. Daniil experienced another break at 1-3 after hitting two double faults and lost his chances for a better result in the opener after only 14 minutes.

Alexander missed some easy strokes in the eighth game and faced break points. He saved them in style and clinched the set with an unreturned serve after 25 minutes. Zverev secured the second set's sixth game with a backhand winner before Medvedev delivered another solid hold for a 4-3 lead, playing much better than in the opener. Alexander won a 14-stroke rally at 15-30 in game eight and sealed it with two service winners to lock the result at 4-4. The ninth game proved to be crucial, as Daniil folded under pressure. He wasted a game point and hit three terrible backhands right after the serve to suffer a break. Serving for the victory at 5-4, the German landed four winners to move over the top, firing his 20th service winner in the final point to advance into the last four.
