Davis Love III: "SuperLeague is a distraction"

The selection of players to complete the list of the Presidents Cup of golf is always a challenge for team captains.

This year, the task has become more difficult, as there are several players who have moved from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf (Super League with capital from Saudi Arabia).

United States captain Davis Love III addressed his awkward position at a news conference ahead of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Davis Love III, statements

"It's a distraction," Love said. "I was on a radio show the other day and the guys were like, 'What do you think of Talor Gooch? I think he might or might not get picked,' I said, 'He's not eligible,' and there was silence. I know he's on the roster, but he's not eligible to play. So yeah, it's tough."

The Presidents Cup (team USA against one non-European international player) is scheduled for September 22-25 at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

Love said the task of choosing the players will be harder for his counterpart, South African international team captain Trevor Immelman, than it is for him. However, the American team will be without possible eligibles like Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed and Phil Mickelson.

"I'm going to have players like (Max) Homa and (Will) Zalatoris who are excited about being part of the team. Homa is a new player who is really going to bring some energy to the team. And there's a lot more to come." They're in that boat, but Max has been up front and that's what we need."

Love is looking forward to playing Zalatoris the next two days in Detroit. "He's a pretty confident, fun guy, but now I know I don't have to worry about Will and I getting along," Love said. "He knows who I am, I know who he is and that relationship, that captain-player relationship, you know, he's got my phone number. I just need to do it with a couple more guys."

The United States has won 11 of the 13 editions of the Presidents Cup and has tied another. He is riding an eight win streak in the series, including the most recent edition in 2019 in Melbourne, Australia. The Presidents Cup matches taking place this year were postponed from 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
