Wimbledon 2022 PREVIEW: Djokovic the favorite, but the pitfalls are many

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz found themselves in the top-half, Rafael Nadal and Matteo Berrettini in the bottom-half of Wimbledon 2022. The prediction, logical consequence of a mix of experience, history, statistics, fitness and absences, says that Novak Djokovic is the favorite for the final victory, but with more unknowns than in past editions.

Matteo Berrettini comes from two consecutive grass-court titles, from last year's Wimbledon final: he is the one who can undermine Djokovic most of all. It is difficult to talk about verdicts in the draw: however, the presence of Casper Ruud, number three of the seeding, positioned in the upper part of the board in the segment of Hubert Hurkacz, teases.

Perhaps, after the very favorites, the one to monitor more carefully. After Kwon, soft, theoretically the world number one should not find any noteworthy obstacles just before the quarter-finals.

In the segment of the Serbian tennis player also Jannik Sinner and Fabio Fognini, called among other things to the very complicated Tallon Griekspoor test. In case of success against Stan Wawrinka, who never made it past the quarterfinals cut at the Championships and who is not in extraordinary physical condition, Sinner could instead find Mikael Ymer or Daniel Altmaier.

Following the logic, even if on grass-courts he has not yet won a match in the ATP Tour, the challenge with Andy Murray in the third round and the one with Alcaraz in the round of 16. Potentially on the path of the Spaniard himself Fognini in the second round: pay attention in any case to the Jan-Lennard Struff test.

The second segment of top-half is rather poor as we said, manned by Hurkacz and Ruud. It is difficult to think that the Norwegian, number three in the seeding, could go beyond the first week: even if there are no unbeatable opponents on the road. Berrettini, finalist of the last edition, fresh from the double on the lawns, will see it in the first round with Christian Garin and in the third presumably with Jason Brooksby.

One between De Minaur or Schwartzman could be the worst of the opponents in the round of 16. Potential quarterfinal challenge with Stefanos Tsitsipas, who presumably will have to face Nick Kyrgios in the third round. Kyrgios and Tsistipas, due to technical conditions, could be the two outsiders of the tournament. In short: among the very favorites Berrettini plays the role of the lucky one in the draw.

Quite different situation for Nadal, called to overcome unscathed the first week on the English meadows. After Cerundolo, the challenge with the winner of the challenge Querrey or Berankis. A hypothetical third round with Lorenzo Sonego is more comfortable, who in any case has Denis Kudla first and probably Alexei Popyrin on the road, while Marin CIlic in the fourth round could already represent a first problem.

Following the logic of the ranking, before the match against Berrettini, in the quarterfinals the very Spanish champion could face Felix Auger Aliassime once again.
