Novak Djokovic is recharging his batteries after a rather disappointing Roland Garros. The winner of the 2021 edition left the scene in the quarters at the hands of his eternal rival Rafael Nadal, who then flew to his 14th seal in Paris. The Serbian star had arrived in the French capital with the status of main favorite, especially after having triumphed in Rome without missing a single set. The former world number 1 gave a performance full of ups and downs, which allowed the Spaniard to close the practice in four sets. Having won the first two Grand Slams of 2022, Rafa stretched over Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the all-time ranking. The 35-year-old from Belgrade will only have Wimbledon at his disposal to close the gap, given that he will hardly be able to fly to New York to compete in the US Open. As if that were not enough, Nole will lose further positions in the standings in the coming weeks (remember that Wimbledon will not award ATP points). At Eurosport, John McEnroe analyzed Djokovic's situation in detail.
McEnroe opens up on Djokovic“Most of us thought it would be Novak Djokovic who would tip the scales in his favor, but there was this horrible debacle in Australia with Novak not being able to make it to the first big event of the year. And after that, I don't think Novak thought Rafa was going to win the Australian Open. Djokovic and Nadal arrived at totally different times of form at the Paris event. The Serb was gaining momentum, raising his level more and more and recovering the best sensations. Meanwhile, the Spaniard came with a lot of doubts related to his foot. So Djokovic showed up in Paris with the idea of: 'I have to catch up with this guy', but Nadal took it up a notch and won another trophy in Paris" - John McEnroe stated. Novak Djokovic lost his rank at the top of the ATP rankings after the latest rankings were released. The Serb who managed to win only one tournament this year has dropped down to third. The year 2022 has been full of challenges for the former world number 1. It started on a controversial note as the Serb left Australia because of his stand against the Covid-19 vaccine. After losing the chance to defend his Australian Open title, the 35-year-old missed a major chunk of the season as he could not enter the United States for similar reasons.
