The Icons Series in the starting blocks
First of all, we are talking about something that has not to do with the world of professional golf.
There are only two pros involved, but they won't play.
The Icons Series, protagonistsErnie Els and Fred Couples will be the Captains of the two Teams, Rest of the World and USA, which will compete with the Ryder Cup formula on June 30 and July 1 at the Liberty National Golf Club.
The teams consist of 12 players each.
The 12 are world-renowned athletes from various sports, with the express exclusion of golf.
These are both active and "retired" sportsmen.
These are the selected athletes.
Team USA
Michael Phelps (former swimmer), Michael Strahan (former NFL player), Ben Roethlisberger (active NFL quarterback), J.R. Smith (former NBA player), John Smoltz (former MLB player), Andrew Whitworth (former NFL player), Ivan Rodriguez (former MLB player), Reggie Bush (former NFL player), Robbie Gould (active NFL kicker), Marshall Faulk (former NFL player), Golden Tate (former NFL player)
Team Rest of the World
Harry Kane (Premier League footballer), Canelo Alvarez (Mexican boxer), Ash Barty (Australian tennis player), Pep Guardiola (Premier League manager), Ab De Villiers (South African cricketer), Brian Lara (former cricketer of Trinidad), Ricky Ponting (former Australian cricketer), James Milner (Premier League footballer), George Gregan (Australian rugby player), Yuvraj Singh (former Indian cricketer)
The teams have yet to be completed, one component is missing from the USA and two from the Rest of the World, but I think it will not be a problem for the Captains to find them. “These guys are great golfers,” Ernie Els told Subpar's Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz “Some are scratch players. We'll see how seriously they take it " "Being so competitive in their home disciplines, I think it will emerge over the course of the tournament" "I don't think anyone wants to lose." A very interesting novelty is represented by the game formula. The program includes three match play sessions every day, played over the length of the 10 holes. Yes, you read it right. A shortened tour of the New Jersey course has been set up to play the matches. On the first day there will be 5 matches played with the best 4-ball formula, followed by another 5 with the greensome formula, in turn followed by another 5 fourball matches. The second day will open with 4 fourballs, followed by 5 greensomes. The 12 singles matches will close the tournament. The one that will be held in New York is the first of a series of events. The program includes tournaments in Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe (host clubs are yet to be defined). I like the idea, the fact that they play sports from other disciplines could be a way to ensure that some non-golfers take a peek and, perhaps, become curious, but the balance is done in the end. At the moment, I am grateful to the organizers for providing me with an opportunity to tell you something different, new, and full of spirit of the game.
