Why Iga Swiatek is the woman to beat at this year’s French Open

It’s Iga Swiatek’s time and we’re all just watching.

With the two-set win over Ons Jabeur in Rome, 6-2, 6-2, Polish sensation Iga Swiatek has gotten used to hoisting silverware above her head in celebration. The Italian Open victory caps off a year of utter dominance from the young player. At just 20 years old, she holds eight WTA titles, including the last five, which she’s fired off her racquet in quick succession. It’s good to be Iga Swiatek right now.

Swiatek’s remarkable run has occurred in the midst of a 28-match winning streak that includes collecting titles on both hard and clay courts, earning trophies at the Stuttgart Open, Miami, Indian Wells and Qatar Open. That winning streak includes 19-0 and 9-0 wins on hard and clay, declaring her the authority on both surfaces right now.

Swiatek’s not bad on grass either, having won the Wimbledon junior trophy in 2018, the only junior slam she played before going pro. She’s also been 7-0 against Top 10 players, with mostly straight set victories, give or take just a few sets, and the only female player to make it to the second week of all four majors last year. Is it any surprise she’s dominating the women’s Tour right now?

Following in the steps of Venus Williams, Justine Henin and Serena Williams, as only the fourth woman to knock out five consecutive tournaments in a row since 2000, it’s no wonder that Iga Swiatek has ascended the mantle of world No. 1 since April.

“I feel like just continuing the same things that I did before really was the key to that,” Swiatek said about the win in Rome after the final, according to tennis365.com. “It’s pretty weird because you may think every tournament, that it takes something more. But I’m pretty happy with my solid game. I was able to just play good and also improve during the tournament.”

Iga Swiatek will be looking to continue her stunning run at the next major on the calendar, the French Open, where she is the one to beat. It was at the 2020 Roland Garros tournament where a just-turned 19-year-old Swiatek took the tennis world by storm with her first major title. The 2020 French Open was also her maiden title. If there’s one thing you can say about the ambitious player is that she certainly knows how to make an entrance.

“She’s playing great and she’s healthy – that’s a fantastic combination," said Martina Navratilova, via tennisupdate.com. "She’s fresh and battle-tough at the same time. She looks pretty unbeatable on any surface, particularly the clay now. So we have an overwhelming favorite going into the French, when it was wide open last year. Clearly, the pressure is not bothering her. She’s just embracing that. It’s great to see – when you are the favorite, and you keep on winning.”

A win at this year’s French major would be her ninth title and her second major. She’s sure to only keep adding more hardware to her already growing trophy cabinet.
