The British Open has a waiver policy that allows former winners to play until the age of 60, and an additional five years can be added for a former champion who signs a top 10 in his final years.

This rule was put in place when Tom Watson finished 2nd in 2009 at Turnberry, after missing the win at 18 and losing in the play-off to Stewart Cink when he was 59 years old. The R&A changed its rules to give Watson five more years. A final year had been offered to him so that he could “finish” his career in this major at St Andrews in 2015.

Greg Norman is now 67 and has won The Open twice, in 1986 at Turnberry Golf Resort and 1993 at Royal St George's Golf Club.
