World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas admitted he has definitely seen Stan Wawrinka play better but noted no one should jump to the conclusion about the Swiss' level since he has just returned from a long injury break.
Wawrinka, who turned 37 last month, underwent two foot surgeries last year.
Over the weekend, Tsitsipas practiced with Wawrinka in Monte Carlo.
During his pre-tournament press conference, Tsitsipas was asked to give his thoughts on the level Wawrinka showed during their practice session.
“I have seen him definitely play better. Having practiced with him in the past, he can play good tennis, Stan. On his best days, he’s someone that can step on the court and do a lot of good things out there from everywhere around the court," Tsitsipas said of Wawrinka, per Tennishead.
“But honestly, I feel like I have seen him better in the past, but I don’t think anyone should be judging based on that, because he’s just right off his surgery and you cannot be playing at 100% straightaway. It’s not really possible, to be honest with you.”
Tsitsipas progresses, Wawrinka loses in Monte CarloWawrinka, who received a wildcard into Monte Carlo, won the first set of his first round match before Alexander Bublik stormed back to win 3-6 7-5 6-2.
A day later, Tsitsipas started his campaign in Monte Carlo.
After a first round bye in Monte Carlo, Tsitsipas dominated Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-0 to kick off his title defence at the tournament in style.
"Great things out there. I was able to really perform close to my best and deliver the result that I did," Tsitsipas said after his dominant win. "Nevertheless, I was still able to generate some good pace and create some good angles which gave me a lot of points."
Tsitsipas plays next Laslo Djere, who defeated Lorenzo Sonego.
