The American Masters champion, Scottie Scheffler, is the name on every golf fan's lips. However, according to his new caddie, Ted Scott, his family won't allow his riches en fame to go to his head.
Shortly after Scottie won his first major at Augusta, Ted told reporters the newest champion was raised in a good family environment.
Ted Scott has been on the bag for all Scottie Scheffler's wins on the PGA Tour, and the world No. 1 couldn't say enough about his caddie after winning the 2022 Masters. The pair met at bible study and spent time together at the 2021 Zurich Classic of New Orleans when Ted and Bubba Watson was still teamed up.
Scott is an Augusta National specialist. He caddied for Bubba Watson for 15 years and together, they won 12 times on the PGA Tour and Watson became a two-time Masters champion. It was a surprise when Watson announced the end of their relationship towards the end of 2021, but he told the media at The Masters that he and Scott are still great friends.
A winning team
When Scottie heard that Bubba and Ted had parted ways in the fall, Scottie figured gave Ted a call to see what he, who had been on the bag for Watson’s two Masters victories and double-digit wins, planned to do next.
“I already thought the world of him as a person,” Scottie said.
Ted said he thought he was done with caddying, but that changed when his phone rang.
“He called me up and said, ‘I really want to work with a Christian.’ That’s how I try to live my life,” Ted said. “The other thing he said was, ‘I really like competing.’ I said, ‘I like competing.’ Thought it could be a fun thing. We hashed out the details.
“If I was going to go back to caddying I didn’t want it to be where the only thing in this world is winning golf tournaments. It would have to be a pretty special opportunity. I want to get better at life as well. I kept asking myself, ‘What is it that’s going to make me want to do it?’ There wasn’t a lot of possibilities in my head until Scottie called and he touched all the things that I like,” Scott said. “Even though he’s only 25, Scottie’s very mature and I knew he would sharpen me up in a lot of ways and I could sharpen him in a lot of ways. It was a lot more than I could go caddie for a great player and win a bunch of tournaments.”
Since joining forces in the autumn of last year, Scottie and Ted have won four times on the PGA Tour. It is not even May yet and Scheffler has earned himself just over $9 million this season.
