Rewowned tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou says Matteo Berrettini has the firepower and self-belief needed to win a Grand Slam but mentioned the Italian's backhand as his major disadvantage.
World No. 6 Berrettini has proved multiple times that he is capable of making a deep Grand Slam run.
Berrettini ended runner-up at Wimbledon last year and has semifinal appearances at the Australian Open and US Open.
“Matteo Berrettini is a player that believes in himself and refuses to lose,” Mouratoglou said on the latest episode of the Eye of the Coach, per Tennis Majors. “Watching him during the Australian Open, I was thinking that, wow, tennis-wise, in a way, if you look at the top guys, they all have that.
“Zverev, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Berrettini – this fighting spirit and the belief in their ability to win even in the most difficult situations, is at the top.”
Berrettini making up for his poor backhand with a good slice“In the big matches, against the best players, it’s a big disadvantage,” Mouratoglou explained. “But he plays smart…he masters the slice backhand, which is a good shot when you have a great forehand, because, when you have a very good slice backhand that stays low, the opponent cannot really attack, they have to play with more spin.”
Berrettini's campaign at this past Australian Open ended with a four-set defeat in the Australian Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal.
Berrettini refused to quit after going down by two sets but couldn't pull off a comeback as Nadal won 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3.
“I remember seeing him play at the UTS (when he had not played for some time) and it looked like he didn’t know whether the backhand would go in the court or not” Mouratoglou said. “But, having zero confidence, with no backhand, he ended up winning it, beating Stefanos in the final, by refusing to lose, thanks to his competitiveness. He found a way to win.”
