Former world No. 8 John Isner said he expected an extremely tight match against Kevin Anderson so he wasn't surprised their Dallas Open round-of-16 match was decided by inches.
Isner, now ranked at No. 26 in the world, edged out Anderson 7-6 (1) 6-7 (7) 7-6 (5).
The match lasted just over two-and-a-half hours.
“It was a good atmosphere for sure and very happy to win that match, especially when I truthfully kind of choked in the second set. Just great to win and I knew it was going to be a coinflip match,” Isner said after the win, as quoted on the ATP Tour website. “I told my friends, ‘This is a coinflip, this is what it is.’ I haven’t played much, he had a match under his belt. It just was going to be tough the whole way, so hopefully I can build on this.”
Isner survived a tight contestIsner had the lone break point of the first set in the fourth game but Anderson saved it.
Isner won the opening two points of the first set tie-break before Anderson won the third point to get on the board.
Isner stormed past the tie-break as he then won five consecutive points to claim the opener.
After only one break point in the first set, not a single break point was seen in the second set.
Isner had a match point in the second set tie-break as he led 6-5 after the opening 11 points.
Anderson came up big in those moments as he won three consecutive points to save Isner's match point and also send the match into a decider.
Just like in the second set, not a single break point was seen in the third set.
Isner got the key mini-break in the 10th point of the third set tie-break as he took a 6-4 lead before realizing his third match point to seal a tight three-set win.
Isner plays next against the winner of the match between Jurij Rodionov and Vasek Pospisil.
