Former world No. 3 David Ferrer says he enjoyed working with Alexander Zverev and they finished their partnership on good terms.

Zverev added 2013 French Open runner-up Ferrer to his coaching staff in 2020, hoping the Spaniard would help him win his first Grand Slam.

Zverev made the US Open final that year but fell just short of winning his first Grand Slam as Dominic Thiem recovered from two sets down in the final to beat the German.

Ferrer enjoyed working with Zverev but his family was the top priority so they decided to not continue their collaboration.

"For me it was not difficult at all to work with Sasha, he is a hard worker. I really enjoyed being his coach, I enjoyed it, but I had to finish after a year - as agreed - because I have a family and I prefer to spend time at home with them and do something else," Ferrer told Ubitennis.

The tactics Ferrer sent to Zverev worked early on

Ferrer was sending tactics to Zverev over the phone during the 2020 US Open.

Zverev came out firing against Thiem as he easily won the first two sets.

Unfortunately for Zverev, he failed to get over the line as Thiem won 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 (6):

"During the US Open, I talked to Sascha every day before matches and sent him the tactics over the phone, not just during the final against Thiem," Ferrer revealed.

Also, Ferrer admitted the presence of the Big Three helped him improve his game.

"I really don't know if I could have done more, but I'm sure I improved my game thanks to them," Ferrer said. "I learned a lot by observing and challenging them on the court. I have no regrets, because in the end I played in the same period as the three greatest champions in history. I loved my tennis career very much and tried to give my best until the day of my retirement. I am very proud of this."
