World no. 1 Novak Djokovic will skip the seventh Masters 1000 event of the season in Indian Wells that starts next week. The first edition of Indian Wells since 2019 takes place in October instead of March, and Novak is not willing to travel to the USA again following the US Open failure, staying at home in Belgrade and thinking about his next moves. Novak is a five-time Indian Wells winner, with three consecutive titles claimed between 2014-16. Thus, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic will all skip Indian Wells for the first time since 2000, with Novak's rivals struggling with injuries and withdrawing from the rest of the season. Daniil Medvedev stands 2000 points behind Novak Djokovic in the ATP Race and will split the deficit in half if he continues where he left at the US Open and claim the trophy.
Novak has been a player of the season so far thanks to three Major titles, throwing everything at calendar Grand Slam and falling on the last step in the final in New York, when he lost to the Russian in straight sets following a pale performance. Djokovic secured the ninth Australian Open title in February before conquering the second Roland Garros crown in June after toppling Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Serb had no rivals at Wimbledon, winning the sixth All England Club crown with a victory over Matteo Berrettini in the final and setting eyes on the Olympic Games and the US Open.
Novak Djokovic will not compete in Indian Wells in October. The Serb failed to claim a medal in Tokyo and experienced a massive setback, not playing any event ahead of the US Open, where he reached the 31st Major final despite losing the opening set in four straight matches! Medvedev proved to be too strong in the title clash, the most important one of Novak's career, beating the Serb 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to earn the first Major crown at 25. Mighty disappointed, Novak is still unwilling to compete again, and we should see if he would play anything in the rest of the season and try to secure the year-end no. 1 spot.
"We are disappointed that Novak will not be able to join us at the BNP Paribas Open this fall. We hope to see him back in Tennis Paradise next March to contend for a record-setting sixth title in the desert," Tommy Haas, tournament director, said.
"I'm sorry I won't get to see my fans in Indian Wells and play in the desert, my favorite place to go. I hope to see you next year!" Novak Djokovic said.
