French tennis star Richard Gasquet caught COVID-19 three weeks ago and it didn't go lightly as the Frenchman was in bed for several days.
Gasquet, a former world No. 7, had been scheduled to play at the Monte Carlo Masters but he withdrew from the first clay court Masters event of the season.
Fortunately for Gasquet, he felt good enough to return to competitive action this week and kick off his clay season at the Barcelona Open.
"COVID-19 really hurt me. I was in bed for several days. I reacted badly, I have some problems, a lot of aches & stiffness, & it's been difficult. That's why I didn't go to Monaco," Gasquet told L'Equipe.
Gasquet beaten at the Barcelona OpenGasquet, now ranked at No. 52 in the world, lost a tight battle against Australian tennis player Jordan Thompson in the Barcelona first round.
Thompson, ranked at No. 59 in the world, edged out Gasquet 7-6 (5) 4-6 7-6 (3) in over three hours of play on the clay of Barcelona.
Gasquet claimed the first break of the match in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead but failed to serve out for the opener in the 10th game.
After breaking back Gasquet in the 10th game, Thompson converted his third set point in the first-set tie-break to steal the opening set.
No breaks in the second set were seen until the 10th game, when Gasquet claimed the lone break of the set to win the second set and force a decider.
Thompson saved two break points in the fourth game of the third set, before breaking Gasquet in the following game for a 3-2 lead.
Gasquet broke back in the eighth game and even had two match points in the 10th game but failed to convert.
In the third-set tie-break, the two players were tied at three points apiece before Thompson won four points in a row to earn a tight win.
