Ashleigh Barty became the first world no. 1 in almost 14 years to pick up the Porsche Grand Prix title after defeating Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the final on Sunday. The Australian needed an hour and 47 minutes to complete her win.

Not only was the third straight three-setter Barty had had to play in the tournament but the manner of her comeback win was also similar in that she had come back from a set down in each of these three matches.

Barty looked to be completely overpowered in the opening set as Sabalenka continued on from where she had seemingly left off in the semi-final, against Simona Halep. However, the top-seed effectuated a thorough turnaround in the second set. Barty’s resurgence spilled onto the third set as well in the initial few games before Sabalenka arrested the bleed in an attempt to repair the damage. However, she wasn’t able to script a comeback of her own as Barty went on to notch the 11th title of her career.

Porsche Tennis Grand Prix: Ashleigh Barty's dominance continues

This was also Barty’s third title for the 2021 season, after the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne and the Miami Open. She’s also the first player to win three titles this season.

Speaking with the press after her win, Barty said, “This week’s been phenomenal for me. We’ve played a lot of tennis, a lot of matches. And I’ve certainly felt like I’m taking my tennis to kind of a new level, in a sense of being able to be calm and play with freedom and play without consequence in a way, just going out there and try to bring my best every single point… I think it’s important to just continue to work in the right direction, try to do right things and know that over time you hopefully get the result, and if you don’t, you just keep going for the next time, and I think that’s a massively important attitude to have.”

After winning the singles title, Ashleigh Barty partnered with Jennifer Brady to clinch the doubles title against the American team of Desirae Krawczyk and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5.
