Io Shirai will be the first to challenge Charlotte Flair

One of the two big TakeOver matches for tonight’s NXT was the #1 contenders ladder match, fighting for the right to be the first to challenge new champion Charlotte Flair. It included Io Shirai, Candice LeRae, Chelsea Green, Mia Yim, Dakota Kai, & Tegan Nox.

This match opened the show.

Let’s look at some of the crazy spots.

Dakota Kai’s heavy Raquel González got involved, preventing Io Shirai from climbing up and winning early on. However, they don’t call Shirai the Genius of the Sky for nothing.

The field got their revenge against Raquel later when Mia and Tegan teamed up to put her through a table.

Tegan Nox was eventually taken out of the match by a big kick from her enemy, sending her through a ladder.

Chelsea Green sustained a leg injury when she missed a big kick to Mia, getting her knee stuck in a ladder. The HBIC hit that leg with a chair.

Green sold the leg the rest of the match, pretty much a non-factor. But Robert Stone, who was with her ringside all night, helped her in the ring. He even climbed the ladder on the other side of her to help her up. But Candice LeRae and Io Shirai knocked them off the ladder and out of the match.

It was LeRae and Shirai who were the last two to climb the ladder. That’s when Io shoved Candice, sending her off the ladder and onto another that was set up in the corner.

That allowed Io Shirai to unhook the briefcase and become the new #1 contender.

Now, that means she’s probably going to lose to Charlotte since that’s what happens with most first title challengers. But it will be a very good match.
