2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic was disappointed after The Championships got cancelled because he considers it a special event.
On Wednesday, the cancellation of Wimbledon was officially confirmed and The Championships got called off for the first time since 1945.
"Unreal. What else can I say? I feel especially sorry for Wimbledon because that's event which always brings special emotions in me. But it is what it is. The life goes on and we have to continue to fight," Ivanisevic told Sportske Novosti, as revealed on Sport Klub.
The ATP and WTA extended the suspension of the men's and women's professional tours until at least July 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Unfortunately, a further suspension wouldn't be a surprise as several players have said that we may not see any tennis for the rest of 2020.
Ivanisevic, a former world No. 2, doubts this season will resume and suggests that the coronavirus pandemic may even impact the start of the next season.
"I think tennis won't be played anymore this year. Mine most optimistic prognosis is that the players will hit the court when the time comes for the Australian Open -- but even that's under a question mark," Ivanisevic said.
"What will happen in the meantime and how will all this impact the tennis world? It won't be easy for anyone -- players, coaches, tournaments organizers or anyone else who makes a living by doing a tennis related job."
Ivanisevic works with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who started the season with three consecutive titles and an 18-0 match-winning streak.
