Top-ranked Egyptian tennis player Mohamed Safwat believes it was a great decision to postpone the Tokyo Olympics.
Safwat, 29, earned a spot for the Tokyo Olympics after winning the gold medal at the African Games last August.
World No. 131 Safwat was set to become the first Egyptian male tennis player to represent his nation at the Olympics.
On Tuesday, the Tokyo Olympics were postponed for 2021 because of the coronavirus outbreak.
"I think the decision to postpone was the best thing for everyone, in terms of the health of the athletes, the fans, the organisers and everyone," Safwat told The National.
"The postponement is also good because it gives athletes better time to prepare because if it was going to be held in July, and we’re all quarantined until at least May or June, there wouldn’t have been enough time for the athletes to get ready for it. I think this gives a fair chance to everyone to be prepared.
“No one expected this and no one saw this coming. It’s threatening all of humanity, so it’s bigger than sport. As athletes, we are always travelling from one place to another so we are at risk, and it’s tough also for us.”
Meanwhile, the ATP Tour won't continue before June 8.
Before the suspension, Safwat was playing some of the best tennis of his career.
This past February, the Egyptian won his maiden Challenger title in Launceston and achieved his career-high ranking of No. 130 in the world.
