Shamil Tarpischev: 2019 Was a Significant Year for Russian Tennis

Shamil Tarpishchev, president of the Russian Tennis Federation, says 2019 was a very significant year for Russian tennis.

According to GoTennis, Tarpishchev says, “The outgoing season of 2019 gave us all a whole series of significant events and bright victories of Russian players in the international arena that allow us to look to the future with optimism. Judge for yourselves: in total, Russian tennis players won 667 victories at international tournaments in different age categories in more than 200 cities in the world."

Tarpishchev says that Daniil Medvedev's success and rise to the Top 5 in the world rankings were among the highlights of the season. "Perhaps the most memorable was the triumphant rise of Daniil Medvedev and his rapid advancement into the World's Top 5. Who would have imagined at the beginning of the season that this year Daniel will be the first to pass the 50-victory line, win tournaments in Sofia, Cincinnati, St. Petersburg, Shanghai, and compete with Rafael Nadal on equal terms at the U.S. Open Championships. By the way, the Russians have not reached the final of the Grand Slam tournaments for more than 14 years and have not played in the season-ending ATP tournament for more than ten years. Medvedev managed to do both, and at the same time returning prestige to men's tennis. He rightfully became the best Russian tennis player in 2019."

The last Russian male tennis player to reach the Top 5 in the world rankings was Marat Safin, who is now the captain of the Russian team at the ATP Cup. Medvedev is part of the Russian team that will play under Safin in the ATP Cup tournament.
