Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka will play his first ATP tournament of the 2020 season at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha, per Michal Samulski.

The 34-year-old is set to appear at the Doha event in back-to-back years and make his sixth appearance at the tournament.

World No. 16 Wawrinka debuted at the Qatar Open long ago as he made it past the qualifying event at the tournament in 2005 to clinch a main draw spot.

The Swiss made four consecutive appearances in Doha between 2005 and 2008 but it took him four years to register his first main draw win at the tournament.

Wawrinka picked up three consecutive first round exits in Doha, before he fell just short of winning it all at the tournament in 2008.

Back in 2008, the Swiss made the final before losing to the now three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.

After being absent for over a decade, former world No. 3 Wawrinka returned to Doha earlier this year and made the quarterfinal.

It remains to be seen can Wawrinka win his maiden Doha title in January and start the new season on a high note.
