The 28-time Davis Cup champions Australia is through to the quarter-final at the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid, defeating Belgium to set a thrilling clash against Canada. In the first rubber, Nick Kyrgios delivered fury from his initial shot to oust Steve Darcis 6-2, 7-6 in an hour and 25 minutes and grab the 11th Davis Cup triumph. Nick was untouched on his first serve, winning 43 from 43 and never facing a break point, keeping the pressure on Darcis all the time and prevailing in a tight second set to seal the deal in straight sets. It was a perfect start for the Aussie who broke in the first game of the match after a forehand error from Darcis, landing three service winners in game two to cement the advantage.

A double fault cost Darcis another service game at 2-4, allowing Kyrgios to wrap up the set with four aces in game eight for a 6-2 in 23 minutes! The Belgian was powerless on the return in set number two as well but this time he defended his serve nicely, repelling a break chance in the third game and staying in touch until the tie break where they had 19 consecutive points that went with serve before Nick scored a mini-break at 10-9 to move over the top following a forehand mistake from his rival, earning the first point for Australia ahead of the clash between the top-ranked players. There, Alex de Minaur took down David Goffin 6-0, 7-6 to forge the overall victory for his country and put them in the quarter-final.

The youngster fended off two out of three break chances and mounted the pressure on Goffin who couldn't endure it, struggling on both the first and second serve to give it away four times from ten opportunities de Minaur created. David kicked off the match with a double fault that cost him the opening game and never found the rhythm to drop it 6-0 in no time at all. Alex broke in the third game of the second set with a volley winner to extend the advantage, wasting a match point on the return in the ninth game and suffering a break in the next game to bring David back to 5-5. The Aussie had to save two set points on serve at 5-6 to reach a tie break that he won 7-4 to avoid spending more time on the court and push Australia into the last eight.
