Tennis - Chris Evert's Annual Pro-Celebrity Classic successfully took place this weekend in Boca Raton, Florida and raised over $800,000 towards drug abuse and child neglect. The funds raised go towards programs funded through Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida and through the Drug Abuse Foundation of Palm Beach County.
18-time Grand Slam champion Evert commented, "This was one of the most exciting events in our 30-year history. Having Barry Gibb play at the Gala was a dream come true and really helped us reach our fundraising goal for this year!”
With this weekend's event, the total funds raised over 30 years by the event is now close to the $26 million mark. Pop legend Barry Gibbs performed at the event to a sold-out crowd and celebrities and tennis stars who participated in the event included Carson Kressley, Jon Lovitz, Gavin Rossdale, Kevin McKidd, Scott Foley, Tate Donovan, Shawn Hatosy, Helio Castroneves, Seal, David Cook, Martina Navratilova, Patrick McEnroe, Luke Jensen, Rennae Stubbs, Vince Spadea and Jesse Levine, besides Evert herself.
There were some awards and scholarships also given out during the event. The Vitas Gerulaitis Memorial Scholarship was given to Jaquira Church, the 43rd woman to receive the award, which is given to women who have participated in social service programs offered by the Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida that partners with Chris Evert Charities in supporting at-risk children and families.
Dana Tiek-Sosa was presented with the Alan Thicke Scholarship by Tanya Thicke. The award is given to young single mothers who need financial assistance for college.
