Rising Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime wasn't happy with the fact that he didn't realize his chance against Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut in the final of the inaugural Davis Cup Finals but he still felt proud with his team's achievement afterwards.
The 19-year-old entered the court extremely motivated and determined to win the opening rubber of the finals tie but world No. 9 Roberto Bautista Agut was too much for the Canadian as the Spaniard won 7-6 (3) 6-3.
World No. 21 Auger-Aliassime had the lone break point of the first set but didn't convert as Bautista Agut cruised past the tie-break to win a tight first set, before breaking the Canadian twice in the next set to seal a straight-set win.
In the following rubber of the tie, world No. 1 Rafael Nadal didn't miss out on the chance to seal the win for the hosts as he defeated world No. 15 Denis Shapovalov 6-3 7-6 (7) to bring Spain its first title since 2011.
"We both had a chance to win and a chance to lose. I could have won the match, but, despite everything, I think I can still be proud. I had opportunities and I did what I had to do. It’s tough because when you have chances in the first set and things don’t go your way, it’s hard to swallow. It was an important point since Nadal was up against Denis in the next match. But that’s life and they played better, so congratulations to them," Auger-Aliassime said, per Tennis TourTalk.
