Nick Kyrgios does not try hard enough and tennis fans should start caring less about the Australian, according to Marin Cilic’s coach and former professional Wayne Ferreira.
With a possible Round 2 showdown against Spaniard Rafael Nadal, Ferreira feels that there is no doubting the Australian’s talent but questioned his desire and drive to go deep into the tournament.
He is one of the few players to have defeated all members of the Big 4 Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. But he gets into a self-destruction mode at times during matches, something that was seen during the Rome Masters.
He told Express Sport: "If he feels like he wants to put in the energy and try then he's going to be tough. His serve is enormous. He's got a great service game, he's very powerful off the ground. He does a lot of things very well but it really depends on his head. If he is invested mentally and physically he could be anybody."
When asked if it was disappointing to see Kyrgios not fulfil his talent, Ferreira added, "He doesn't seem to care about it. If he was trying his best and having issues, that's one thing. But he doesn’t try. He knows he doesn’t try. He talks about it in the press about how he doesn’t try and that he actually doesn’t care so we shouldn’t care should we."
Kyrgios takes on fellow Australian Jordan Thompson in the first round at Wimbledon.
