Venus Williams' advice to Cori Gauff

Seven-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 Venus Williams was ousted in the first round of her most-won Major by fellow American Cori Gauff.

"She played very well,” Williams said, showing admiration for the young girl despite her personal upset. “For my part, I admit that I have not played well either, let's say it has been a contrast between the two parties. I am not fully aware of their history or their idols, but I am very happy to see her playing this well. I do not know how far it will go, the sky is the limit. [...] She did everything really well during today's game, that way of putting the ball inside the court ... There is no doubt that she has done things much better than me. She has also served very well when she needed it, it has been a very complete match, a great performance in general.”

After being asked what advice she would give to the fifteen-year-old -- who made one of her dreams come true by defeating the five-time Wimbledon champion -- the eldest Williams remained concise,"I would tell her to have fun, to enjoy life, that's all you can do."

Despite this early loss, the 39-year-old plans on coming back -- a clear challenge set for herself that goes against stereotypes set for players of her age. "Right now I have my mind on the pre-US Open tour, that's all,” the eldest Williams said. “The plan is to return here next year.”
