Speaking on BBC, the seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe commented on Cori Gauff's win over Venus Williams in Wimbledon. The American former player said: “I don’t know a lot about her background but I know something. Venus Williams when the draw was made and saw she played a qualifier said ‘please don’t put me against Coco Gauff because it’s like looking in the mirror’ of when she was younger. She’s not only physically mature, you can see that, but mentally. Fifteen, the way she acts and the way she plays. I would be surprised and I don’t say this lightly but I look at her right now, the way she plays, that if she isn’t No 1 in the world by the time she’s 20 years old, I would be absolutely shocked. The game she’s got, her athleticism, what she’s bringing to the table."
Chanda Rubin added: “We have seen something incredible. The way that Coco Gauff, Cori Coco Gauff, came out and played, just 15 years of age, her very first Grand Slam main draw, her very first Wimbledon main draw, and against a player of Venus’ calibre who played a good match. A hand from Gauff, a classy young woman, a hand for the great champion Venus Williams. She gave it her all but just didn’t quite have enough. I think we are seeing a champion in the making. It’s born right here. It was so impressive from Gauff. Moment after moment, when she got into some tough spots in this match, how she just worked her way through it, hit her way through it, made adjustments. There were so many things that were impressive about that performance.”
