Angelique Kerber, current title-defender at Wimbledon, has opened her race toward a consecutive English Major title with a smooth 6-3 6-4 win over fellow German Tatiana Maria. "I was really nervous, to be honest,” Kerber confessed. “Because of course to going out there as the defending champion, it was really special. Walking on the Centre Court playing there again, I mean, a lot of emotions, a lot of memories.”
Fifth seed of the tournament, “Angie” -- as she is nicknamed -- talked about the emotion that it means to see her name on the wall of past winners, and disclosed her inner feelings, "It's the first time I've come back as the defending champion. I'm trying to enjoying it, as well, to enjoy the moments on court but as well even more off-site."
“[Tatiana Maria] was a tricky opponent,” the World No. 5 said about her countrywoman. “I was trying to find my game and play every single point. [...] You need a lot of patience. You have to go for it, hitting the ball. The serve was important today, but also playing every single point. I know she is playing until the last point. She's always trying to come back, trying to doing her best with her style of game."
Kerber will now face American Lauren Davis to step a little closer to repeating her last year feat. Their last and only clash happened during the 2011 US Open, and was snatched by the German.
