Queensland to celebrate Ashleigh Barty’s incredible feat

Ashleigh Barty’s amazing and inspiring rise to the top of the WTA Rankings will be celebrated in Queensland with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk discussing this preposition with tennis officials. The win made Barty only the second Australian woman to hold the world No.1 ranking, after Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1976.

Palaszczuk further showed her admiration for Barty, saying that she is humble and has a let’s get our job done attitude. "In terms of celebrations, we'll talk to Tennis Australia, and I'm quite sure that Mark [Tennis Queensland president Mark Bloomfield] and I can put our thinking caps on," she said.

"But I'm quite sure that we can do something locally here at the Tennis Centre."

Tennis Queensland president Mark Bloomfield said Barty's win would inspire young girls and women. "They have a role model now," he said.

"They've seen one of their own start as a five-year-old, learn here in Brisbane, go right through the ranks and come out as world number one, and proves that they can all do it."

Ms Bloomfield said plans had not yet been cemented for a celebration. "All this has happened very, very quickly ... There will be some celebrations for sure but we haven't worked out what they are yet," he said.

 Barty’s rise to the top also saw her get acknowledgements from legends like Billie Jean King and Googlagong Cawley herself, who said she was very proud of Barty.
