Petra Kvitova feels ready to compete at Wimbledon despite the fact that she has started training just a few days ago because of the left arm problems that kept her out of the French Open and the grass season.
Petra was forced to withdraw before her first match at the French Open accusing left arm problems. She described the injury as being “a kind of tightness in my forearm”. The double Wimbledon champion hasn’t played any matches since then and she was happy that she recently started hitting again: “I ran a few tests since Roland Garros. It's improved, but not as much as I wanted, so I really have to be careful with everything. I just couldn't do anything for a couple of weeks. I was very pleased when I could do something very easily with my left hand - drinking or something like that. I took the racket just a few days ago, so I couldn't really hit much.”
However, the Czech feels well enough to compete at Wimbledon and hopes that she will stay this way: “My arm is getting better and if nothing bad happens I will be ready to play on Tuesday. Hopefully, nothing happens. I'm ok.”
On the other hand, Kvitova would have preferred to have more time to prepare for Wimbledon: “If it was a normal week, I would take an extra week to rest.” Petra admitted that she hasn’t done a proper Grand Slam preparation, but she trusts her strength: “I just hit today for the first time a little bit more than normal and was ok, but, of course, my expectations are not really high, so maybe it will help me be more relaxed on the court. I am not really happy that I haven't had the best preparation that I could have for the grass season, but I think I learned a lot about me from the past. Sometimes I don't really need to hit for so many hours to be prepared.”
Kvitova will play against Ons Jabeur in the first round of the Grand Slam. The Tunisian player can be a tricky opponent as she reached semifinals in Eastbourne after eliminating Konta and Cornet. Ons had her share of problems in the last period considering the fact that she withdrew from Mallorca due to shoulder pain and from Eastbourne due to a right ankle injury.
It remains to be seen who will be in better shape on Tuesday.
