Johanna Konta has had some fantastic performances on clay but has struggled on grass. Speaking about her mental routines she practices every day. “I put together a bit of a screenplay on what I expect from the day, what I look forward to in the day, what I anticipate the challenges might be,” Konta said. “It’s just to prepare myself for what the day could bring, being open to that and also bringing to life all the good things that I know I bring to the day as well.”
She further added, “It’s still a massive part of how I’m doing now and it always continues to be a part of it. That side of my game and that side of me continues to evolve, so there is always going to be work going on there. It’s never been about just fixing something. It’s about helping me develop as a human being more than anything.”
Fellow Brit Katie Swann also spoke her mental battles and Konta said that she can relate to it. “I’ve been talking about this side for a lot of years now so it’s definitely nothing new for me,” Konta said. “I’ve always been very open with basically why I’ve been working on this sort of thing. I’ve had my own struggles as well. Every player has their own struggles.”
She went deeper into her thoughts. “I’m feeling good,” Konta said. “I feel like I’m improving every week, every day, every time I step out on to the court. I feel like I have a purpose and I’m working towards something. I’m working to be better and grow and that makes my job very satisfying right now, to be able to feel like that when I’m out on court. I look forward to every match I get to play, especially the Slams and for me especially Wimbledon.”
