Reigning Wimbledon Champion Angelique Kerber got her grass court campaign off to good start, winning her Mallorca Open Opening round match against Ysaline Bonaventure in three sets.
“For a long time I wasn’t really playing matches, and of course playing matches is different from practice sessions,” Kerber said. “And especially now playing on grass again. I practiced only for three days on grass. So at the end, it was feeling still not so natural, but it’s the first match. I was feeling so far good on grass and I’m looking forward to the grass season.”
Next up for the German today is a mouth-watering clash with former Wimbledon Champion and former World No.1 Maria Sharapova, a wild card entrant into this event.
“I think it will be an interesting match,” Kerber said. “We are both playing our first tournament on grass. We’ve both played so many matches, really tough ones, so I think it will be an interesting match for us, for the fans, for the tournament.”
“I’m looking forward to it. It’s always good to have some really good and tough matches, especially when you’re making preparations for a Grand Slam. That’s why I’m here, to play good tennis against the best players.”
This is the ninth meeting between the two players with both the players splitting 4 wins each. But Kerber has an upper hand over the Russian off late, winning their last three previous meetings, including their latest clash on grass at Wimbledon in 2014.
