In an interview to TennisNet, Germany's Davis Cup team captain Mikhail Kohlmann commented on Alexander Zverev saying multiple times that he will not play the Davis Cup finals in Madrid. Kohlmann believes the 22-year-old has different priorities now rather than speaking with the Federation about it. "The Davis Cup final is not the main topic now. Sascha has other things to focus on. Now it's about handling his personal things and making his tennis get into the right direction. Ahead of or in the Us Open, we will definitely speak with Sascha and we will learn if there is a possibility he will play in Madrid", said Kohlmann, who also thinks Zverev can go far in the upcoming Grand Slams: "I am pretty sure he will get a very good result in Paris, Wimbledon and US Open", Kohlmann told Heilbronner Stimme. "In general, he will improve his level this year."
On the young generation, he added: "I think two players did very well, Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas. When they were very young they were already playing the qualies. They may not have won too much in the beginning, but having had unbelievably good training mates and getting suited to their level was good."
In an interview to L'Equipe, the Madrid Open owner Ion Tiriac blasted the new Davis Cup format. "It's a disaster. It will be so bad. The sports ended, it's a business, it's about money. 18 teams over a week, with matches at the best of three sets, what does it mean? Just because someone put billions on the table. The International Tennis Federation would better retire", said the Romanian investor.
