French Open fun May 28: Federer, Zverev, Stephens, more

As the second Grand Slam of the year successfully concluded all its singles opening round matches⸺despite some gray clouds and the arrival of sunset⸺we have prepared another recap of the off-score events. Ready for another backstage peek at the French Open? This one involves culture, soccer stars, and of course, funny moments.

1. Back to school: Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens apparently have to stress about something else than just passing the second round on Wednesday. Keys received the suggestion to learn some French words for her possible post-match speech, and requested help on social medias. Stephens later asked her countrywoman if she could borrow her review prompts.

Keys will face Australia's Priscilla Hon for a pass to the round of 32, while Stephens will battle against the Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo.

2. The stars have aligned… somewhere in Roland Garros. The Swiss legend Roger Federer met PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, and the two celebrities had the time to pose for a picture. Beware, Federer, Nadal might get jealous… In fact, the Spaniard had confessed to Tout Le Sport during the Rome Open that, should he choose one of Paris’ prime soccer team players for his dear Real Madrid, it would be the young French prodige.

Roger Federer, who summoned a full stadium on Sunday, day of his exordium on the Philippe Chatrier, will face Oscar Otte in the round of 64. 

3. No connection, no distraction: Alexander Zverev seems to have found the cure to his clay victories drought since the end of his evolution at the Rome Open: he lifted the trophy in Geneva, and now successfully installed himself in the second round of the French Championship⸺granted, all of this while frightening his fans with super tight scores. What could be the reason of his awakening? Seems like Sascha had broken his phone while at the Foro Italico, and decided not to fix it since then…

The German will face Mikael Ymer on Thursday for a chance to stay on the run toward his first Grand Slam title. In the opening round, he beat Australian John Millman 7-6(4) 6-3 2-6 6(5)-7 6-3.

4. If tennis were football… American football star Ndamukong Suh, present among the French Open crowd, revealed his ideal football team formule if he were to cast tennis players. The outcome is Serena Williams as quarterback, Rafael Nadal as running back, Roger Federer as tight end, and Novak Djokovic as kicker.  

Ndamukong Suh and his fiancee Katya Leik are in Paris and have shown their support to Serena Williams.

5. How cute! Thanks to the trending baby filter, the ATP offered us our favorite players in their toddler version.

All nine represented players are still alive in the French Open main draw. 

Bonus: While we’re at it, here is one we missed from yesterday (which also involves a baby): after his first round win, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga very gently accepted to hold a baby while the infant's parents took a picture!
