Jannik Sinner answers how he feels amid Nick Kyrgios' harsh criticism

Jannik Sinner says he can't bother himself with everything that gets said about him as the Italian tennis star insists the most important thing is that people close to him don't consider him a bad guy or anything like that.

On Sunday, the 23-year-old captured his second Grand Slam title after beating Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 7-5 in the US Open final. For the world No. 1, it was another great tournament in 2024 as he made it all the way with just two dropped sets in seven matches played.

But while Sinner was doing extremely well on the court, some would bring up his doping case that was made public just a few weeks before the start of the final Major of the year. And one of the loudest critics was Nick Kyrgios, who was working on ESPN during those two weeks and didn't shy away from blasting the top seed throughout the tournament.

After sealing the US Open title, one of the reporters wanted to know how the Italian felt about his victory considering everything that happened and some of the reactions that followed.

“I don't know. You have to ask all the other players. This, I don't know. Well, that what I can say is that the general reaction of the players was quite positive, even when things came out. Then there have been, of course, some different voices, but this is in everything. This is not only in tennis. This is in other sports and different jobs also," Sinner explained.

"I mean, you can't really do anything about that. That's why you have, as I said before, the people close to you, these are the people who knows what was going on and what I and my team went through because it was not only me; it was the whole situation. And, yeah, that's it. I just can talk from my side and from my team's perspective, and we are all very proud of this achievement.”

Kyrgios took another shot at Sinner after the US Open

Shortly after the Italian won the title, the tournament's official X account issued a post that was captioned: "SINNER SINNER US OPEN WINNER!!"

But Piers Morgan wasn't impressed, bluntly responding: *After failing TWO drugs tests. (Fixed it for you)."

Kyrgios seemingly fully agreed with Morgan's take and sarcastically wrote: "First time in history! We are witnessing greatness!"

Previously, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist slammed the handling of the two-time Grand Slam champion's doping case as "ridiculous" and said that there should have been at least a two-year ban.

But why Kyrgios feels this way?

The week before the final Major of the year, the 29-year-old spent a lot of time arguing on social media about why he felt that double standards were involved in the doping case that stunned the tennis world. And when the tournament finally started, he provided a very lengthy explanation on ESPN, claiming he had nothing against the current world No. 1 but just felt that the handling of the case would have been much different if someone other was in question.

“I think I stand by every word. Everything I put on social media I have to stand up for. I’ve seen many of my friends go through doping things and being suspended. We’ve seen players like Halep and everyone and it seems like every time one of these things comes up, there’s always a different process for different players," Kyrgios said on ESPN during his conversation with Chris Fowler.

"It’s nothing against Sinner personally at all. I know how important he is. He’s one of the greatest tennis players we have right now... And how important he’s gonna be for the next 15 years. I’m not denying any of that. Nothing against him personally. If you look at Jenson Brooksby... Players who’ve had their careers taken away for up to a year... And someone like Jannik just kind of doing it his own kind of way. I think he had it on his own terms for most of the time. I don’t think that’s fair and equal for the rest of the tour.”

In one of his post-match interviews at the US Open, the eventual champion was directly asked how he felt about the remarks that Kyrgios was making. But Sinner's response was that he didn't want to say anything about it.
