China's Zheng Qinwen has has just become an Olympic gold medalist after beating Donna Vekic in the Paris Olympics final 6-2 6-3.

After upsetting top favorite Iga Swiatek in the semifinal, world No. 7 Zheng also didn’t fail to deliver against recent Wimbledon semifinalist Vekic as she dropped just five games en route to winning the final.

In the final, Zheng had more unforced errors than winners - 14 winners and 20 unforced errors. But Vekic was making even more errors as the Croatian blasted 30 unforced errors and had just 11 winners.

By beating Vekic, Zheng continued her extraordinary 2024 season - in which she previously became a Grand Slam finalist and also reached a top-10 ranking for the first time in her career.

How Zheng beat Vekic in the Paris Olympics final?

When the final started, Zheng made the first move after breaking Vekic in the second game.

In the following game, Vekic had an instant chance to get the break back but missed out on two break point chances as Zheng went 3-0 up.

Four games later, Vekic had another break point chance but Zheng again saved it to open a 5-2 lead.

After failing to get the break back, Vekic paid the price after losing her serve again in the eighth game and dropping the first set.

Zheng then also made a strong start to the second set, claiming an early break for a 2-0 lead.

Down by a set and a break, Vekic finally earned her first break of the match to get the break back.

After Vekic got the break back, no break points were seen until the eighth game - when she earned four break points and realized her fourth break point to go 5-3 up.

Up by a set and a break and with a chance to serve out for the gold medal, Zheng stayed calm and routinely got it done after converting her first match point.
