Scheffler and Schauffele, duel for gold medal

It really seems like a diabolical sleight of hand that could hardly have been better designed, what will be seen at Le Golf National for the Paris 2024 Olympics. It involves the top two players in the world at the current state of things. One, Scottie Scheffler, has simply been the absolute dominator this year, while the other, Xander Schauffele, has taken home two Majors. The last one just last Sunday. But let's go in order.

Golf, news

Scottie Scheffler, 28, from New Jersey, is the world number 1 by a clear margin. His 2024 has been simply unreal, with six victories in three months, between March and June. Among them, the encore at the Players Championship, the "fifth Major" par excellence, accomplishing a feat no one has ever achieved: winning twice in a row. And, of course, there is also the Masters, the second of his career, and it is already difficult to win just once at Augusta. Among the peaks are also the Arnold Palmer Invitational in which he defeated the competition and the Memorial Tournament, another of the top events on the PGA Tour calendar.

Xander Schauffele, 30, from California, rose to number 2 in the world after winning the Open Championship (aka British Open). Not only that: the only other tournament he has won this year, in addition to the last Major of the year at Royal Troon, is another Major, the PGA Championship. And it's a paradox: in the year in which someone else is the absolute dominator, the man of the most important events on the golf calendar is him. Who, moreover, also won Olympic gold in 2021 in Tokyo, where he managed to contain the furious comeback of Rory Sabbatini, who passed in the Slovakia quota and became silver despite the other South Africans admitted.

With them, however, there are also many other names to keep an eye on. The biggest, inevitably, is that of Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman, who competes here for Ireland because of a choice he made as a boy and has never betrayed since, seemed to have regained his footing at the Scottish Open after the (sporting) drama of the US Open, but at Royal Troon he ran into two truly terrible days, and for this reason his state of form is a real dilemma. It may also be the Olympic tournament of Ludvig Ã…berg, the new Swedish phenomenon who in just one year as a pro has put up numbers on a par with Tiger Woods (and that's not an exaggeration), but many other protagonists should not be forgotten either. Also to be taken into consideration are the ambitions of a Collin Morikawa who is climbing back up the slope, while still in the US quota remains the dilemma of Wyndham Clark, so bad in the Majors, so good on the PGA Tour. Furthermore, the Open Championship has made it clear once again that Shane Lowry should never be left out of the account, which guarantees Ireland two realistic chances. The British (but, in fact, English) pairing of Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick must be verified and even more the contribution of all those who have passed with the LIV Golf, the Arab super league that has upset the last three years on the greens, from the Spanish Jon Rahm on down.

Chapter Italy: obviously Matteo Manassero and Guido Migliozzi certainly do not start out as the favorites. However, there are some signs that lead to placing them in the role of outsiders. A difficult role, given the competitiveness of this tournament, but not impossible. Manassero's spectacular return to the best of his powers has been told in many ways: here it is enough to remember that, in 2020, he began his climb back to the top from the Alps Open, the third level of European golf after the European Tour (now DP World Tour) and the Challenge Tour. Little by little he put bricks back on bricks, in 2023 he was a splendid protagonist on the Challenge and has resumed the role that belongs to him. He is playing well, he is confident and can really assert himself. And, as for Migliozzi, it is impossible not to point out what he did right here, at Le Golf National, two years ago. French Open, last round: on the 18th hole no one makes birdie, in the literal sense of the thing. He does, and with a phenomenal third shot well followed by the fourth. That victory comes to mind if we think about his possibilities on the course that was the 2018 Ryder Cup. And which, today, returns to the center of world attention.
