Monmouth rising star Mateo Bivol opens up about a pro circuit future

ITA Northeast Regional Rankings No.12 Mateo Bivol, tennis player of Monmouth University, granted a kind interview exclusively to Tennis World USA, in which he discussed many interesting topics. Bivol, also in the First Team of All-CAA Awards, focused on the season just ended with the Hawks, reflecting on his future and the state of American tennis.

How do you evaluate your season with the Monmouth Hawks?

"It was a decent season, but I feel like we were close to doing a lot better. There were moments where we showed great potential, and with a bit more consistency, we could have achieved even more."

What were the aspects of your tennis that satisfied you the most? And on the other hand, what are the aspects on which you still need to improve?

"The aspect of my tennis that really worked for me this season was playing aggressively and confidently, especially in high-pressure moments. However, I need to work on my consistency to maintain a high level throughout the entire match."

"The goals for next year are to achieve a higher ranking than this season and to win the CAA."

What are the difficulties in pursuing a collegiate career combining sports and studies?

"The main difficulty is time management, as school takes up a lot of time and we also need to dedicate substantial time to tennis to be successful. Finding ways to catch up with missed classes and managing physical and mental fatigue are also challenging."

Is mental health discussed in the Monmouth tennis locker-room?

"Yes, we have a great mental coach available to us, who visits regularly to check on us and provide valuable tips. This support is crucial for maintaining our mental well-being."

"I would like to try the pro circuit to see what happens. You never know what could come from it, and it's an exciting opportunity to explore."

Who are your tennis idols?

"The absolute GOAT Roger Federer and right now i really admire Jannik Sinner."

What do you think of the state of professional men's tennis in America? In your opinion, what are the critical issues, compared to women's tennis?

"I think America has a super strong generation with players like Fritz, Shelton, Tommy Paul, and many others. It's very encouraging, and I wouldn't be surprised to see one of them win a Major title."
