Carlos fired 14 aces but did not play well behind the initial shot after the second set. The young gun dropped 41% of the points in his games and played against 13 break chances. Alcaraz denied eight and made the difference after converting six out of eight break opportunities, prevailing in the pivotal moments and avoiding another decider. Carlos won four points more than Ugo, and they produced a similar number of winners and unforced errors. The Spaniard did not face a break point in the opening set. The Frenchman felt the pressure, giving serve away two times and propelling the favorite in front. A left-hander closed the first game of the encounter with a forehand attack, and Carlos responded with a service winner in the next one for 1-1. Humbert forced Alcaraz's mistake for 2-1 before the Spaniard landed a service winner a few minutes later for 2-2.

Ugo grabbed the sixth game at 15 and reached more deuces on the return in the next one. Carlos avoided break points and closed the game with a service winner. They served well in games eight and nine, and Humbert needed another reliable hold at 4-5. Alcaraz saved the rival's game point and earned a set point with a forced error. The Spaniard defended superbly and welcomed a terrible volley from his opponent to grab a decisive break and open two sets to love advantage after an hour and 32 minutes. Humbert made a fresh start in the third set and pushed Alcaraz to the limits on the return. Carlos squandered game points at 1-1 and landed a volley long, losing serve for the first time. World no. 3 sprayed a forehand error in the fifth game, falling 4-1 behind and serving to stay in the set at 1-5.

After four terrible service games, Alcaraz landed a volley winner in game four, holding and opening a 3-1 advantage. Ugo held at love in game five and pulled the break back in the next one after Carlos' loose backhand, locking the result at 3-3.

A left-hander held at 15 in the seventh game and made another push on the return. Alcaraz hit a double fault and offered his rival three break points. Showing his clutch, the Spaniard denied them with winners and closed the game after the Frenchman's backhand error, remaining on the positive side and gathering a boost. The defending champion served for the win at 6-5 and created match points with a drop shot winner.
