Boris Becker acknowledges coaching Holger Rune is "a different challenge" compared to coaching Novak Djokovic mainly because their positions aren't the same. When Becker accepted to coach Djokovic prior to the start of the 2014 season, Djokovic already had multiple Grand Slams in his collection and had been ranked at No 1 in the world. In their three full seasons together, Becker and Djokovic enjoyed great success as the Serb won six Slams during that period. Last month, Becker made his coaching return to the Tour after agreeing to work with 20-year-old Rune. Rune, ranked at No 10 in the world, is also a Masters champion but his goals are to land a Grand Slam and reach the world No 1 ranking. Now, Becker's job is to elevate Rune's game and guide the Dane to his first Grand Slam title.
Rune on the difference between coaching Rune, Djokovic"It's day and night. When I started with Novak, he was 25 or 26 years old and he was already a champion, but he lost his place to Nadal. It was a different challenge. When you already have everything, you have to fine-tune the last few things. Holger reached only two quarterfinals at slam tournaments, he is at the very beginning of his career. But Holger has to get closer to Novak, that's the biggest challenge," Becker explained. At this past Paris Masters, Becker sat in Rune's box for his quarterfinal match against Djokovic. Rune played extremely well against Djokovic but the Serb escaped with a 7-5 6-7 (3) 6-4 win. After meeting in Paris, Rune and Djokovic also clashed at the start of the ATP Finals. In Turin, Djokovic claimed another three-set 7-6 (4) 6-7 (1) 6-3 win over Rune. Following his two recent wins over Rune, Djokovic improved in their head-to-head to 3-2 against the Dane. Rune has been very a difficult rival for Djokovic and the Serb himself has spoken very highly of the 20-year-old's game a couple of times.
