Qinwen Zheng played one of the two completed matches at the Zhengzhou Open on Friday. The only player from China who’s still in contention in the playing field won against Angelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-2 in 87 minutes, in their quarter-final match-up.

The match began with a break, on Zheng’s serve but it didn’t take long for her to get the proceedings going in her favour. The 21-year-old won 87% of her first-serve points against her opponent, who won only 59% of her first-serve points.

Neither player was able to dominate on her second serve but Zheng still finished better, winning 45% of her second-serve points to her rival’s 33%.

Zhengzhou Open: Barbora Krejcikova sets Daria Kasatkina appointment

Zheng will take on Jasmine Paolini in the penultimate round. The Italian withstood a second-set comeback attempt by Laura Siegemund in their last-eight encounter, to wrap up the meeting, 6-0, 7-5 in an hour and 44 minutes.

Paolini won 72% of her first-serve points to the German’s 50%. She also won 56% points on return on the latter’s second serve. Of the four break points she faced, the Italian saved three. She converted five break points on Siegemund’s serve.

Meanwhile, Barbora Krejcikova also took her place in the semis of the WTA 500 event. Krejcikova led her rival, Lesia Tsurenko 6-3 in the opening set before the latter decided not to continue in the match due to injury woes.

The Czech will play Daria Kasatkina for an opportunity to make it to the finale of the Zhengzhou Open. The eighth-seeded Kasatkina had already gone into the semis after her opponent in the quarters, Ons Jabeur had given her a walkover on account of an injury.
