Iga Swiatek heralded a successful return to the US Open. The Pole, who’s defending her title from last year, this fortnight in Flushing Meadows scored a powerful 6-0, 6-1 win over Rebecca Peterson in the opening round, on Monday. The 22-year-old needed just 57 minutes to complete the proceedings.
The four-time Grand Slam champion ran away with the match as soon as it began. The opening set lasted just 25 minutes. The highest-ranked player in the world didn’t face any break point across the set and converted three of four break points on her opponent’s serve. In the first set alone, Swiatek hit eight winners, seven more than her rival’s solitary number and finished with five unforced errors to the latter’s nine.
The Canadian began the second set on a competitive note even as Swiatek showed surprising signs of inconsistent play. In the first game of the set, Swiatek stared at a potential break of serve as she trailed 0-40. However, her serve came to her rescue and she was able to put herself on the scoreboard without any problems. As Peterson held her serve for the first time in the match in the following game, Swiatek’s struggled on the other side of the court with hers. Peterson pushed her to deuce on her second service game before the latter kept herself afloat in the set. From that moment on, Swiatek was able to find her form once again in the match and carried it through to her win.
The 2022 champion in New York hit piercing shots and drew out the errors from her opponent. Peterson’s unforced errors also allowed Swiatek to not break into a sweat in the match and cruise through safely.
US Open: Will the draw open up for Iga Swiatek?In the second round, Swiatek will play Australian Daria Saville. Saville posted a similarly one-sided win over American wildcard, teenager Clervie Ngounoue. Saville needed 73 minutes to notch a 6-0, 6-2 win for herself in what was her 17-year-old rival’s first time playing in the main draw of a Major.
Earlier, 10th seed Karolina Muchova was the first player to make it to the second round this season. The Czech won against Australian wildcard, Storm Hunter 6-4, 6-0 after 65 minutes of play.
Eighth seed Maria Sakkari, however, failed to make good of her match-up against Spain’s Rebeka Masarova in their first-round encounter at the US Open. Sakkari led the latter 4-1 in the opener but Masarova flipped the match on its head as she clinched a 6-4, 6-3 triumph.
