Caroline Wozniacki, 33, reveals she talked to Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters before deciding to return to pro tennis. Williams, a former 23-time Grand Slam champion, took maternity leave after winning the 2017 Australian Open and she was able to return to the top when she came back in 2018. Clijsters, a former four-time Grand Slam champion, retired from pro tennis for the first time in 2007 before returning in 2009 and winning the 2009 US Open in her third tournament back. Wozniacki, the 2018 Australian Open champion, welcomed two kids in the last two years and she is now set to play for the first time since the 2020 Australian Open. In the Montreal first round,
“I talked to Kim and Serena. Serena’s just on a different level, tennis-wise. When she played her best it was basically impossible to beat her. So she probably had a different perspective coming back than me," Wozniacki said, via The Tennis Letter.

In the Montreal first round, Wozniacki plays against qualifier Birrell. It has been more than three and a half years since Wozniacki played her last match as a pro. Now, there are some new faces at the top and the way the game is played has also changed a bit. Reflecting on what lies ahead, Wozniacki suggests she has accomplished her goals and "has nothing to lose" in her return.
"At this point in my career and a lot of the players' careers that have been on tour for a long time, you know how to play your game. You know what you need to improve on or what you're doing great. But at the end of the day, a lot of it is mental and in important moments you need to be able to step up and play your best and not fear failure. You've got to want to take your opportunity to take your chances. I'm here. I've got nothing to lose. I have already done so much in my career and basically ticked off most of the goals that I had set. But I'm here because I love to compete. I love the sport, and I feel like I still have a lot to give to the sport. And doing it with the family just makes it so much more enjoyable," Wozniacki said.
