Alex Corretja thinks the Cincinnati Masters final loss Carlos Alcaraz suffered versus Novak Djokovic was "a perfect lesson moment" for the Spaniard ahead of the US Open. In a three-hour and 49-minute Cincinnati final, Djokovic edged out Alcaraz 5-7 7-6 (7) 7-6 (4) after saving a match point. After beating Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, Alcaraz appeared to be close to beating the Serb again as he was up by a set and a break in the Cincinnati final. But Djokovic refused to quit and ended up clinching a stunning comeback win over Alcaraz. But former two-time French Open finalist Corretja thinks there's a silver lining to Alcaraz's loss as the 20-year-old Spaniard can now analyze and see what he did wrong against Djokovic in Cincinnati.
Corretja on Alcaraz's Cincinnati loss to Djokovic: A perfect lesson moment"I don't think it should affect him because for him it's a perfect final. It's a perfect lesson moment, he learned from RG [Roland Garros] semi-final and then he did unbelievable at Wimbledon. Now, this is another final with where he knows how to be there with Novak. So I don't think he should go thinking any bad feelings, especially [given] he's going into the tournament where he won last year. He already won another major, which may help him to understand that he can do it again," Corretja told Eurosport.
Now, the head-to-head between Alcaraz and Djokovic stands at 2-2. In the last three months, they have played three times. Their next meeting could come at the US Open.
“I think every time they play they start knowing each other a little bit better. I think for both it's good. I think for Carlos because he's going to know how to deal in this important moment, which I think Novak he's been through many, many, many times before," Corretja said.
